Confirmed: Volvo planning hot C30R hatchback

Volvo has reportedly confirmed plans to build a performance-oriented version of its C30 hatchback. Since the demise of the S60R and V70R, Volvo hasn’t had an R-badged model geared toward driving enthusiasts. While Volvo might forgo the “R†designation for some new nomenclature, this vehicle will be, for all intents and purposes, a C30R.

Volvo officials told U.K. magazine Autocar the über C30 will deliver over 300 horsepower and feature all-wheel-drive. (Recent rumors have indicated Volvo might deliver as much as 350 hp). Production will be limited to 4500 units over four years.

The car’s powerplant will be borrowed from the Ford Focus RS — that’s a 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder if you’re wondering. Other highlights will include 20-inch wheels and color-keyed brake calipers.

There’s speculation the launch will be linked to the British Touring Car Championship, with a front-wheel-drive iteration of the C30R running on ethanol fuel.
